I don't know the answer to your specific question, but I can relate my experience. I got a barley crusher last November, and it was always hard to crank. I did it by hand, but it was HARD! Then, I started using my drill and I was having problems like you. I changed my gap (using the feeler gauges) and still had problems.

Old thread, but having now recieved and used my BC, I'm now in a better position to comment on BC vs. MaltMill. My conclusion is BC all the way! It feels like a better-built product, and gave an absolutely beautiful crush at the factory setting, with my old corded drill attached to the driven roller.

Yes. I used a barley crusher for about 30-35 batches before the knurling wore out. When I received my monster mill 2.0 with hardened steel rollers, the first thing I noticed was how much more heavy duty it was. They second thing I noticed is that I could mill 40# of grain in no more than 2-3 minutes (if that).

If you buy the Barley Crusher, it will come ready to grind, no real assembly required. If you don't mind some fabrication, you can buy a CrankandStein or a Monster mill which need to be mounted. But all of them are essentially the same - two rollers, adjustable gap, motorizing capability, etc.

On my MM3 mill the non-driven roller will get stuck now and then. It's inconsistent so I normally drop a few grains in before pouring in the whole batch (as someone mentioned earlier).

I was also comparing these two, and ended up with the Cereal Killer mainly because of the use of ball bearings rather than sleeves. The mill is mounted into an old cabinet with an old but restored 1940's 1/4 hp motor, reduced from 1750 down to <200rpm using 1.5" and 14" sheaves (about 9.3 : 1).

Barley Crusher: 3/8ths Monster Mill: 3/8ths. Well that makes that easy. Except with a 3/8ths bore, the total OD dia for the sheave is limited to about 4″, which is not anywhere remotely close to enough reduction in speed that we're looking for. The solution is a shim to increase the dia of the mill drive shaft to 1/2″.

Location. Columbia, SC. Sep 8, 2008. #1. My first two batches through the barley crusher with drill power had too much flour come through. I figure it is a good excuse to use an old 1/3 HP/1725 rpm motor I have in the basement. So far the plan is to use a 1.5" (Pitch Dia. 1.05") and a 14" (Pitch Dia. 13.55") pulleys from Grainger.

Ok, it's time for a really dumb question. Is there a 1 inch o-ring somewhere on the barley crusher? The reason I ask is weird. I just finished a brew. While I was stirring my mash, there was a broken, thin o-ring in the mash. I pulled it out. It's about an inch in diameter, and it's thin and very flexible.

It probably holds a pint of corn at a time and is a very, very slow way to crack corn but for a while it was all I had. This is what we bought to do the job at the distillery. It will do a 50# bag of 2-row in a couple of minutes. If only the best birds sang, the woods would be silent. Usge.
